story & photos by LORI McLORN As quickly as the droves of tourists invaded every inch of Gananoque this summer, they have vanished - now that the season has come to an end. This charming little town can rest once again as it recuperates through the fall and winter. But like a child who refuses to go to sleep and argues to stay up, Gananoque feels the same way. It still has so much to offer. About two and a half hours east of Mississauga and just minutes from Kingston, this quaint, picturesque town makes a perfect fall getaway. The spectacular autumn colours make a magnificent backdrop for the lovely architecture and breathtaking waterfront. Gananoque provides award-winning accommodations in their historical bed and breakfasts and Victorian Inns. Most of these offer incentive getaway packages at discounted rates during their off season. The Gananoque Inn established in1896 is a majestic waterfront landmark. The Trinity House was voted Best Canadian Inn in 2000. The turn of the century accommodations such as The Sleepy Hollow Bed and Breakfast, the Victoria Rose Inn, The Athlone Inn, Manse Lane and the Blinkbonnie all deserve honourable mention. These exquisite buildings are worth discovering even just to gaze at during a leisurely stroll through the town. Unique shops and restaurants line the main street complete with a shaded picturesque park. Here is where typical Gananoque hospitality abounds. Residents cannot resist acknowledging total strangers with a quick hello and a smile. There are many restaurants, pubs and patios to choose from. The B&Bs and Inns offer some incredible dining as well and should not be overlooked. The Golden Apple boasts an inviting quaint patio lined with mature trees near a pocket of elegant historical mansions. The renowned 1000 Island Playhouse has offered 25 years of professional theatre. Its season runs from May to November. Unlike most, this theatre overlooks the river and islands and is a must see during intermission. Weather permitting, sneaking in 9 holes is possible as Gananoque has several golf courses in the area. Some can be reached by boat and others have elevation changes, forests and granite outcroppings. Although the famous 1000 Island Tour Boats retire for the season in mid-October, there are several private boat tour companies available. The Rockport Boat Line, just minutes away, is having a Hallowe’en Dinner Cruise on October 28th. An alternative way to see the Islands is by land. Follow the 1000 Island Parkway to Ivy Lea. Just a ten minute picturesque drive out of town, there are autumn colours on one side and islands on the other. Since Gananoque is considered the gateway to the islands, this is a fabulous way to get a taste of a few of them. If you’re interested in biking or hiking along the St. Lawrence River, the scenic 1000 Island Parkway is paved and picture perfect. Bicycle rentals are available. Whether you experience this town in winter or summer, Gananoque leaves a lasting impression. With its rich history, culture, scenery, entertainment and hospitality it is a town you won’t soon forget.
