What is your current state of mind? Excited and anticipatory. What are the components of bliss? A healthy and happy family. Meaningful work. If you could invite anyone from history to dinner who would it be? My two Grandfathers. They were fascinating people who played a role in the development of Canada. My paternal Grandfather had a life that reflected the immigrant experience, and my maternal Grandfather had a fascinating career as a Commander in the Royal Canadian Navy. I was not old enough before they passed away to take full advantage of their knowledge. What is the best piece of advice you were ever given, and who gave it to you? One of my first bosses instilled in me the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. That has stuck with me throughout my entire career. What is the one thing you’d change about yourself? I need to slow down and smell the roses more often. What is the most outrageous thing you’ve heard said about yourself? “He’s grumpy today.” I was appalled since I try hard always to be positive. Since then I’ve tried even harder. What would it take to make you go, WOW!!!? My teenage daughters cleaning their room without being asked. Who are your real life heroes? My Father and Bobby Orr. What feature/quality do you find most interesting in another person? An ability to tell stories. I love to listen to great story tellers. What word or phrase do you most overuse? The phrase: “Sure, I’ll do that.” I use it a lot and it sometimes gets me in trouble, but has generally led to positive outcomes. What is your earliest memory of childhood? Watching the Toronto Maple Leafs (the Dave Keon era) play hockey. You have $100.00, what do you spend it on? Nothing. My daughters spend it. What has been your greatest memory? The births of my daughters and the sense of personal accomplishment I felt the day I officially finished my PhD. What would your autobiography be called? The Man Who Made his Father Proud. What’s your pet peeve? What really ticks you off? Fussy eaters. Who is your favourite fictional hero? Atticus Finch. Who is the most interesting person you’ve ever met? I’ve been fortunate to meet many interesting people. But Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion is sure a stand-out for me. She’s a great story-teller (See answer #9 above). You have an afternoon all to yourself away from everything/everybody, how do you spend it? Taking a long bike ride. You arrive at the pearly gates, what does St. Peter say to you? You look like you’ve lived a happy life. If the whole world were listening, what would you say? Look! The glass is half full! |
